Fit Reds nets prestigious NHS award!

04-10-2011 12:30:42

A novel diagnostic test for bowel cancer, a remote wound management service and ‘Fit Reds’ were among the winners of the Medipex 2011 NHS Innovation Awards, announced on Thurs 22 September. Now in their seventh year, the Awards recognise NHS staff members across the Yorkshire & Humber and East Midlands regions who have developed innovative ideas to improve patient care. Two hundred people from across the NHS and medical technology industry attended the Awards, hosted at Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield. The annual competition forms a key part of Medipex’s work to promote innovation within the NHS, helping innovators to develop their ideas and linking medical technology companies with clinical staff to facilitate product development and clinical trials. Medipex received over 120 entries and twenty-five clinical teams were shortlisted across 5 categories. Fit Reds won the ‘GP and Primary Care’ category and £2000 prize money!

The BACP project is funded by One Barnsley and the Big Lottery, BACP's project workers include Community Development & Health Workers and Health Trainers who work with project workers from Priory Campus and Barnsley FC’s Community Sports & Education Trust’s Health Officer.  The workers have been involved in implementing a healthy lifestyle and weight management project called Fit Reds.

Using the first-team facilities at Barnsley Football Club, the participants – all of whom are male Barnsley residents, aged over 35 and who consider themselves to be overweight/inactive – receive a mix of healthy lifestyle advice and physical activity over an 8 week programme. To date, the 66 men who have completed the course have lost a combined total of 42 stone 12 pounds in weight and 83% of them have lowered their blood pressure as a direct result of their participation.

Bobby Hassell, Barnsley FC’s current longest serving player and Fit Red’s Ambassador regularly attends to motivate and support the participants. Still in its first year, Fit Reds, has already achieved some outstanding results, will have run 6 eight-week programmes and now has won a prestigious regional award. For more info or how to join Fit Reds please phone the Barnsley Association of Community Partnerships Health Team on 01226 737031 or email darren.england@barnsleyfc.co.uk

Fit Reds 4Copy of the Stagecoach Press Release (amended made by BACP, funding from the NHS and The Big Lottery for the Barnsley Association of Community Partnerships, Community Development & Health Workers and Health Trainers is provided to support the work undertaken for Fit Reds)

A Stagecoach Yorkshire driver has swapped the bus lane for the hallowed turf of Barnsley Football Club in a bid to improve his health and fitness.

Russell Craft is the first Stagecoach driver to sign up to the Fit Red’s Scheme, run by the club’s Community Sports and Education Trust, the Barnsley Association of Community Partnerships and local charity, the Priory Campus.

Fit Reds aims to inspire overweight or inactive men aged over the age of 35 to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle. It has been so successful, it is now on its fourth, eight-week cycle with a total of 60 men losing 33 stone between them. Most men involved self-refer or are encouraged to attend by their employer. The project particularly appeals to loyal Barnsley FC fans that have access to the same facilities and equipment as their football heroes.

Russell, who has worked for Stagecoach for 10 months, has lost one-and-a-half stone since joining Fit Reds.

The 46-year-old father of four from Worsbrough, Barnsley, said: “I have been a life-long Barnsley FC fan and used to love playing football. I was also a little bit over weight, so when the opportunity arose to join the Fit Reds, it suited me perfectly.

“I have lost a stone in weight, going from 17 and a half stone to 16 and a half. It was really hard work but losing weight and exercising has reduced my blood pressure, which I’m delighted about. I feel so much better and Fit Reds has helped change my attitude to healthy living.

“There are so many healthy initiatives that are aimed at women these days that I found Fit Reds a refreshing idea. It has also been a great opportunity to meet new friends and I still attend a weekly football training session where we all compare our success stories.”

Fit Reds has since inspired Russell to take up badminton, boxercise and swimming.

In the last cycle of Fit Reds 93% lost weight. Total weight loss of the 15 men was 10 stone 6 pounds with the average weight loss per participant 4.4kg. Overall, there was a 1.4 reduction per person on the body mass index.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, also said: “We are really proud of Russell’s efforts on the Fit Reds scheme and we hope he inspires other Stagecoach employees to take part and improve their health and wellbeing. It’s a fantastic initiative that tackles men’s health head on.”

Criminal Records Bureau Price Increase

18-03-2011 14:21:10

Barnsley Association of Community Partnerships completely understand that due to the current climate this will not be welcome news and I detail below a excerpt from the letter I was sent from the CRB’s Chief Executive, Steve Long.

“......This increase and its timing is, however, linked directly to the Government’s recent decision to scale back the VBS to more common sense levels and the resulting cancellation of the requirement to register with the Scheme.  This increase, which is significantly lower than the intended registration fee of £64, will fund the administration costs of the retained elements of the Scheme.

Over the coming months the CRB will be working closely with the Home Office and the Independent Safeguarding Authority to develop proposals on how to implement the recommendations from the criminal records and VBS reviews and continue to maintain and enhance our existing services and overall performance.....”
